One Single Impression: Underground
There was a pensive air
Boarding the naval ship
Troops marched forward
Some with quivering lip
Just a short time ago
Graduating from high school
Facing a new life
With absolutely no rule
Except to follow orders
Without questioning why
Learning any hesitation
Could cause many to die

Beautiful words.
Does make a young cadet joining the naval force very pensive. So does his family.
oh yes, this new lifestyle can cause pensiveness for certain.. Lovely OSI Maggie :)

Maggie,
My three weeks at Topsail Island, NC, put me in contact with a lot of Marines, many of whom are off to Pakistan very soon. They work so hard to condition themselves to do what they will. I admire the discipline, and I feel for the sacrifice they make of a huge part of their freedom. Great poem.
This is a wonderful poesm, Maggie. Wonderful in its writing but the subject matter is tough.
Been there, done that though. Except I stayed in Texas at Fort Bliss my entire five years. Some of it was during Viet Namm.
..
Reminded me of days when I passed from college and joined Industry. Freedom of college was missing and I used to feel Home sick (I mean college sick). I used to envy my friends who carried on with further studies.
Beautifully put in words.
Ah, yes. Pensive. Such change. Nicely crafted!
I can picture these young cadets crossing the transom from an environment that encourages opening the mind to one that demands closing it. Basic changes and basic training. Thanks for writing about this experience.
Oh I am sure there IS a pensive air involved in this! Great take on the prompt~
